Once diagnosis has been made, Dr. Goel will create an individualized treatment plan for your TMD. Since the severity of the TMD will vary from person to person, there are various recommended treatment options available for temporomandibular joint disorder.

Oral Appliance Therapy

Oral appliance therapy is a successful technique in treating TMJD. Oral devices are extremely popular due to the simplicity and comfort of the appliance.

Splints

Splints prevent the upper and lower teeth from touching to avoid further grinding and clenching which would result in muscle pain. These appliances are typically worn at night and it will enable your jaw muscles and joints to relax and heal, relieving you from any pain.

Trigger Point Injections

In order to provide relief from muscle fatigue, strain, injury, and overuse, including grinding or clenching, trigger point injections break up knots/trigger points. Trigger point injections reduce pain and provide relaxations to the muscle groups. For successful treatment, a series of injections is important.

Facial Stretching and Exercises

Stretches and Exercises recommended by a doctor or a physical therapist can help reduce tension in the jaw and relieve unnecessary muscle tension.

Apply cold and hot packs

An ice or cold compression pack applied to the affected area for about 10 to 15 minutes to reduce inflammation and improve circulation to the area to reduce pain.

Medication

For less severe cases, Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs are recommended. It helps loosen and relax tight muscles by reducing the inflammation. With any condition, it is always essential to speak with your doctor about which direction is best for you.
