Are you afraid of the dentist? If you are, you’re not alone. In fact, many people consider even a simple cleaning an arduous task. Sadly, some patients won’t visit the dentist until they experience an emergency such as infection or tooth decay. Waiting only leads to more problems and can ever affect overall health.
Fortunately, sedation dentistry has come a long way in recent years. There are many types of sedation, ranging from nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, to oral pills. Stronger sedations can also be administered an IV in extreme cases. All of these methods work, but we recommend visiting our dentist for specific advice.
Nitrous oxide, which is generally referred to as laughing gas, is the most commonly utilized form of sedation dentistry. As you probably know, laughing gas is inhaled through a mask. Once you're under the effect of nitrous oxide, you'll be extremely relaxed but still conscious. While the effects of nitrous oxide wear off extremely quickly, you may not want to drive yourself home.
A different sedation method is called oral sedation. If our dentist decides this method is best for you, you’ll be given a pill the night before your procedure. When you arrive at our practice the next morning, you’ll be given a second pill to help you fully relax. The downside to this option is that you won’t be able to drive home because the pills take some time to wear off. Similarly, IV sedation can be used to manage extreme cases.
With sedation dentistry, you’ll be able to treat your smile. If you’re interested in learning more about sedation dentistry, please don’t hesitate to give Smiles for Life Dental Group a call at 408-241-6501. Dr. Pooja Goel and our team are excited to hear from you!
