If you are not giving your pearly whites the attention they deserve, your smile will reap the results. To create healthy teeth and gums requires daily care and action. What does this mean for you? In a nutshell, creating and maintaining healthy oral hygiene habits. To brush effectively, brush at least twice a day for at least two minutes each session. In addition, try to practice the following:

-- Make sure your toothbrush is in prime condition.  Frayed bristles don't clean effectively, so be sure to replace it when the bristles become worn. Replacing it every 3-4 months is a good rule of thumb.

-- Keep your toothbrush clean and allow it to dry between use. Keep it in an open container, and don't allow it to touch another's toothbrush, to avoid transferring bacteria.

-- Choose a toothpaste that carries the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance.

-- To protect tooth enamel and gum tissue, a soft-bristled toothbrush is ideal, and find the right size to fit comfortably in your mouth.

-- If you have difficulty maneuvering your toothbrush because of manual dexterity issues, you might look into using an electric toothbrush. Many patients who have muscle weakness find an electric toothbrush easy to use.
